Dan’s DJ pick of the week is “Tennessee” by Alicia Blue, Lucinda Williams, and John Paul White.
Hailing from the outskirts of Los Angles, Alicia Blue uncovered an early interest in music after receiving a guitar from her grandpa. Around the same time, she found an predominant love for Bob Dylan and Jewel. As she aged, her interest in writing, poetry specifically, amplified. While caretaking for Malcolm Hayes Jr, a former soul singer, he helped her discover that she would better reach the world by putting her poems to music. He was the first to ask “why are you so blue?” coining her name. After this eye-opening moment, she was determined to learn guitar and pursue a music career.
After extensive busking and hustle, Blue befriended musical icons. She joined Lucinda Williams on tour, collaborated with John Paul White, and had Lincoln Parish of Cage the Elephant produce her album Inner Child, Pt. 1.
“Tennessee” is a glorious collaboration between Blue, Williams, and White, capturing the essence of being a Music City resident. This hopeful tune blends Blues, Country, and Americana to reflect the experience of making it in Tennessee. Nashville locals will appreciate the well-crafted lyrics that highlight both the city’s landmarks and its stereotypes alike.
This soulful and catchy tune is sure to bring a sense of belonging throughout Tennessee and the greater Nashville area. It’s always a gift to the ear (and soul) when you hear someone singing about the same struggles. Furthermore, this track makes you want more from the trio while rekindling the thought that not all hope is lost, and anything is possible within the 615.
