Another week another terrific Live on the Green am I right y’all? I sure hope you were there to see Smokin’ Joe Robinson put on a guitar clinic. Followed by some of the hottest soul Nashville has ever seen delivered by none other than St. Paul and The Broken Bones. To wrap the night up Robert Randolph and the Family Band brought the house down and brought all the Nashville ladies he could fit up on stage with him. This week we will stay true to Live on the Green standards and keep the craft beer and food trucks LOCAL. We hope to see all you Nashville NATIVES at Public Square Park again this week. Again bring your friends, bring your dogs, bring the kids, bring that lucky lady or man in your life to the best party in Nashville, this weeks line up is stacked with Nashville greats, and some California boys with the best harmonies west of the Mississippi.
Formed in 2008 in Orange County California, Local Natives have yet to fit a “perfect” mold of a genre. Their sound has been described as “afropop-influenced guitars with hyperactive drumming and hooky three-part harmonies.” Really that description is quite perfect. In 2010 they released their first full-length album, Gorilla Manor and have recently followed it up with their sophomore effort, Hummingbird released in 2013. Speaking from experience, this is a live show that you do not want to miss, clear your schedule because Local Natives is sure to impress if not stun. If you don’t believe me check out their song “Breakers.”
Whether it was Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Delta Saints, and Luella & The Sun delivering fiery hot jams or the 88-degree and nearly 90% humidity heat there is no denying that Live on the Green last week was HOT. We hope you all stayed safe as well as hydrated and chose to cool down, refuel, and party on with a craft beer and a delicious treat from one of the many food trucks. Take this week to rest up and wipe the sweat from your brow because this Thursday Labor Day weekend starts early at Public Square Park we are at it again and this is going to be a week you do not want to miss. Pull out your dancing and get some light stretching in because people, believe me, feet will be movin’, hips will be shakin’, and Nashville will be rockin’.
As soon as he sits down you won’t be able to get off of your feet. Robert Randolph, pedal steel guitar extraordinaire, will be joined by The Family Band on Thursday- night and is sure to exceed your quota of incredible steel guitar, lively walking bass lines, and singing straight from the soul. Since 2001 Robert Randolph & The Family Band have been around the world and back performing with acts such as The North Mississippi Allstars, Dave Matthews, and Eric Clapton. The band’s latest studio album Lickety Split included guest appearances by Trombone Shorty, and Carlos Santana. Needless to say this band will not disappoint. Get “Amped Up” by taking a listen to “Born Again” it will be sure to get your “Hips Shaking.”
Well Nashville it’s nearly that time of the week again, no not Hump Day, but Thursday which brings with it Lightning 100’s Live on the Green. Heading into the third week we look back and remember fondly the past two weeks as we watched Gin Wigmore, ZZ Ward, Erin McCarley, The Mowgli’s, Matt & Kim, and Matt Nathanson grace the stage in Public Square Park. This week will prove that third time really is a charm when two Nashville powerhouse acts join an international ambassador of all things hip-hop, reggae, and soul. Accompanying the music will of course be a wide variety of local craft beers, and food trucks. If you missed out on the first two week or maybe you have never attended a Live on the Green, be sure to come down this week and start a new Thursday night tradition.
Since their first release in 1994 with Home Michael Franti & Spearhead have been spreading politically and socially aware music around the globe. Not only will their music get you thinking but it will get you movin’ and a shakin’ as well. Deeply rooted in hip-hop, reggae, soul, jazz, and rock (to mention a few) this band will surely get you on your feet first, then into the air with songs like “Say Hey (I Love You)” and “The Sound of Sunshine.” Coming off of their latest release All People which dropped July 30, 2013 Michael Franti & Spearhead are sure to bring the house down this Thursday at Public Square Park. So grab the family or a date and spend your Thursday night with Michael Franti, Lightning 100, and the rest of Nashville.
Ladies and gentlemen, friends and family, Nashville natives and those who wish they were: the time is upon us. It is officially the 2013 Lightning 100’s Live on the Green season. You better have an escape route from your office to the parking lot planned, because you are going to want to dip out a little early for the next 6 Thursdays. Like everything else in Nashville, Live on the Green has only been getting bigger and better over the past 5 years. With that in mind, we are proud to bring you the most high profile line up we have ever had. Every single artist performing tomorrow could have been a headliner in years past, making the tomorrow night’s kickoff the perfect way to start your weekend. So before you head on down to Public Square Park to enjoy the great weather, local craft beers, delicious food trucks, and fantastic musical acts, lets take a look at tomorrow’s line up.
Matt and Kim
Ask anyone who has been to a Matt and Kim concert and they will tell you the same thing: This power couple’s synth pop brings the heat extremely hard but don’t let that fool you. Their signature brand of sugary-sweet anthems are a surefire way to get anyone with ears moving and grooving. Based out of Brooklyn, these lovebirds didn’t even know how to play their instruments when they met at Pratt Institute. They’re self-titled release was an underground phenomenon that everyone in east village had to have, and the rest is history. Matt and Kim have been touring the globe non-stop since 2008 and have seriously honed their craft. This is certainly a show you do not want to miss.
This overnight sensation is a hard artist to peg into just one sound, which is exactly why Lightning 100 has loved her since day one. Drawing influence from old blues artists like Son House, having pipes that would rival Aretha Franklin’s, and an album collaboration with Kendrick Lamar indicate that she really knows her stuff. Her debut EP was shortly followed by the breakout album Til the Casket Drops, and her performance at SXSW garnered an almost unreal amount of buzz on internet blogs. Check out ZZ Ward performing Drive Like U Stole It before you see her tomorrow at Live on the Green.
Gin Wigmore may claim to be a black sheep, but she has been earning the attention of professional songwriters and producers since she won the International Songwriting Competition at the age of 18. Her sound is aggressive and sultry, bluesy and distorted, and sexy as all get out. The success of her most recent album, Gravel and Wine, has landed her songs in several shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Teen Wolf. Chances are if you turned on a TV in the past year, you’ve heard a Gin Wigmore song. Check out Gin and her band of hell raisers here.
Alabama Shakes started blowing up in Nashville right after their two night performance with Jack White at Ryman Auditorium. After seeing Alabama Shakes, Wells Adams stated “That if Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin had a love child, it would be Brittany Howard.” Hope you enjoy this live version of “Hold On” by Alabama Shakes! By the way, is their any other radio station in the country that would bring you a free show featuring Alabama Shakes?!?!?
