Casey’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Mother” by Trauna! An energetic, funky dance tune, “Mother” brings the energy of old-school R&B to electropop. Members Liz Freel and Connor Robertson pull from many influences both within and outside their local Grand Rapids, MI scene, including Connor’s other projects Michigander and Leland Blue. In particular, the band seems to be paying attention to current trends in indie pop while bringing in their own fast-paced funky flair.
With a chorus that will stick with you for the rest of the day, “Mother” represents the band’s boldest move so far into the dance direction. Where past singles “Feel a Little” and “Your Basement” made efforts to cultivate musical space, “Mother” eschews that quest in favor of a driving, present sound that infuses the song with movement. Siren synths, bouncy bass, and layered percussion come together to create a narrow soundscape that sends a direct beam of dance into the listener’s ears. Listen to “Mother” by Trauna below!
