Jay’s DJ Pick of the Week this week is “Mockingbird” by Larkin Poe!
Larkin Poe is the iconic and dynamic sister duo who have been making waves by creating their own brand of roots rock and roll. Rebecca and Megan Lovell are originally from Atlanta, and now reside in Nashville where they write and produce their fiery bodies of work. The sister’s southern roots burn through their sound which gives it a soulful country feel. The two are anticipating the release of their newest album Bloom, which is set to come out on January 24th, 2025. In the meantime, they have released four tracks from the album, one being “Mockingbird”.
The track opens with a gritty guitar line and simple drum beat. Rebecca’s beautiful vocals enter strong yet subtle, setting up a build to the chorus that Larkin Poe does so well. The two have said that this song is about “becoming”, more specifically the journey that one takes to get there. The journey towards change is full of missteps and hiccups, but “Mockingbird” encourages listeners to refrain from looking in the rear view mirror. The message being focusing on the past mistakes hinders the ability to move forward and become something beautiful. The upbeat, rock and roll nature of the song gives its message of encouragement the extra edge.
With “Mockingbird”, Larkin Poe announced their Bloom World Tour. They’re visiting cities in North America and Europe, and spreading that southern country-rock charm with them. Tickets go on-sale to the public on Friday, October 25th. Also be sure to check out their official video below!
