Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Friends, Lovers, Ex-Lovers: Whatever” by Susto Stringband!
Susto Stringband is a collaborative creation of SUSTO and Holler Choir. SUSTO is an alternative country-rock band from Charleston, South Carolina. The band is fronted by Justin Osborne who serves as the lead singer, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist for the group. The rest of the band’s lineup features a revolving roster of talented musicians. Holler Choir is a group that draws its influence from old-time Americana and bluegrass while working towards a unique sound. Holler Choir is composed of singer, guitarist, and songwriter Clint Roberts, along with a rotating cast of gifted musicians.
“Friends, Lovers, Ex-Lovers: Whatever” is the first release for Susto Stringband! The song also serves as the lead single for their upcoming album “Susto Stringband: Volume One.” The band is going on tour across the United States throughout the year supporting the album’s release on March 28th.
The single is one from the SUSTO catalog that was given a new life through the Susto Stringband version! The song was based on a Valentine’s Day card that Osborne wrote for an ex who lived in an apartment below his at the time. The song features lyrics like “friends and lovers / ex-lovers / or whatever / I hope you know I’ll always care” to demonstrate the complex nature of moving on from a romantic relationship where you still care for the other person. The instrumentation allows for moments where each instrument has its moment to shine while creating a thumpy rhythm to dance along to.
The music video for the song features footage of the band performing the song live in the Thirsty Beaver to a crowd of dive bar dwellers! The video captures different individuals passionately singing along with their friends, lovers, ex-lovers, or whatever. Watch the official video below!
