Jayson’s DJ pick of the week is “Ankles” by Lucy Dacus!
“Ankles” is the first single released from Dacus’ upcoming album “Forever Is A Feeling,” releasing on March 28th. “Ankles” marks Dacus’ first solo release since her 2021 album “Home Video.” The single unveiled a new a baroque inspired direction Dacus is taking for the album, both sonically and visually. In support of this upcoming album, Dacus announced a North America spring tour in April and May.
“Ankles” opens with an orchestral instrumental piece that builds over the course of the first verse with a twinkling guitar and pounding drums that explodes into the first chorus. Dacus then slows back down in the verses to highlight lyrics like “What if we don’t touch? / What if we only talk / About what we want and cannot have?” to paint a picture of intense yearning for something that you shouldn’t want. In the chorus, Dacus uses lyrics like “I’m not gonna stop you this time, baby / I want you to show me what you mean / Then help me with thе crossword in the mornings” to fantasize about what could happen if there was action put towards the longing that Dacus and this person are both feeling.
