This week’s Frothy Monkey Local Artist of the Week is Nate Head with his song “Gothmog” here on Lightning 100!

Fans of Zach Bryan may recognize the artist behind this week’s pick, but this touring drummer has more up his sleeve than what he does behind the kit. Nate Head has a wealth of experience as a multi-instrumentalist and is a jack-of-all-trades on the road. However, it is with the release of his first solo album where he really comes into his own. Nate Head released NATHAN on August 22nd. As his debut LP and first release in six years, it ushers in a new era for the talented musician.

“Gothmog” is a mid-paced alternative indie track that boasts a strong melodic hook with incredibly vivid storytelling and offbeat storytelling. The chorus rings out with the words, “In the space between the tree line and the back of the fellowship center I swear I saw a demon, looked like an orc.”

Nate Head tells the story of seeing a demon behind his childhood church in a quirky manner that not everyone could manage. “Gothmog” leaves you singing along to a washy acoustic guitar, high synth, and an unsurprisingly grooving rhythm. Head writes of being influenced by artists like Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, and Dijon. This combination of indie staples as his influence, plus Nate Head’s work as a musician for one of the biggest artists in Americana country, make for a pedal-steel soaked alternative track that stands in a league of its own. Listen to “Gothmog” on Lightning 100 and below. Be sure to hear all of Nate Head’s debut album, NATHAN, on vinyl and all streaming platforms!
