This week on Community Corner, Brother Love sits down with the American Heart Association to talk about women’s heart health and the work the Go Red for Women campaign is doing here in Middle Tennessee.

Sophie Marini, Marketing Communications Director for the American Heart Association, and Bryna Mody, Go Red for Women Director, join the conversation to share an important message. Heart disease affects more than just older men. In fact, It is the number one cause of death for women. Almost 50% of women do not realize they either have cardiovascular disease or face a serious risk of developing it.

Throughout the episode, Sophie and Bryna explain why this mission matters so much in Tennessee. Women’s health and maternal health outcomes remain a serious concern across the state. They talk about how the Go Red for Women movement raises awareness, funds research, and connects women with resources that help them understand their risks and take action.

In the episode, Bryna opens up about her own experience with preeclampsia and delivering her baby prematurely. Her story is just one example of many stories of heart health affecting real women and families every day.

A big idea from this week’s episode is that protecting your heart does not require a complete lifestyle overhaul. Small steps such as simply knowing your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers and getting exercises supports better heart health. The conversation also explores the strong link that is found between mental health and heart health. Sophie and Bryna explain how simple habits like a 20-minute walk or taking time to decompress can have a nonsignificant impact.

Sophie and Bryna also share some of the ways the American Heart Association supports communities across Middle Tennessee. Their work includes heart walks, outreach events, CPR education, and year-round opportunities to get involved in the Go Red for Women campaign. The upcoming Heart Walk takes place on April 18 at Murfreesboro Medical Clinic, and more information can be found here.
It’s through this events like these that Sophie and Bryna are helping to build a healthier Middle Tennessee.
