The Staves are an indie folk trio comprised of three sisters: Emily, Camilla, and Jessica Stavely-Taylor. From Watford, England, the band got their start playing at open-mics and local pubs. The Staves gained traction in the states as the opener for The Civil Wars on their 2012 tour. In addition, they played South by Southwest in 2012 and toured with Nathaniel Rateliff and Ben Howard. They released their debut album, Dead & Born & Grown, in late 2012. Their second album, If I Was, debuted at #14 on the UK Album Charts in 2015. The trio branched out with a 2017 album release with yMusic, a chamber music ensemble from New York. Now, The Staves are working on their third studio album, Good Woman, set to come out in February 2021. The title track and latest single from the upcoming album, “Good Woman”, is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week!

“Good Woman” touches on dealing with loss whilst finding strength within and appreciation for yourself. When writing this song and album, the Stavely-Taylor sisters were coping with the unexpected passing of their mother. Camilla also broke up with her longterm boyfriend. While you can hear the pain of these losses in “Good Woman”, the song is more importantly empowering and uplifting. Despite struggle and heartbreak, The Staves sing of knowing that they are strong, resilient, and “good” women. The simple two-chord progression throughout most of the song consistently builds to match the building strength and hopefulness of the lyrics. “Good Woman” is ultimately a song about knowing that even when life is bleak and makes you feel so low, you are always enough.

“Good Woman” beautifully encompasses the themes of the upcoming album. In a press release, the three sisters shared what the album brings up for them: “We think of love. Big, big love. Our Mum. Our Dad, Our friends. And of loss. Death and birth. Womanhood, motherhood. Sisterhood. And coming home.”

The music video for “Good Woman” came out recently and features a beautiful and powerful performance from the trio of sisters. Check it out below!
