Rev’s DJ Pick of the week is JJ Grey & Mofro’s new single, “Wonderland.” On February 23, 2024 Alligator Records will release their new album Olustee. Which will be their first new album in nine years, the last being 2015’s Ol’ Glory.
A Southern soul-rock band from Jacksonville, Florida. They take inspiration from southern rock artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Jerry Reed and some more soulful acts like Toots Hibbert and Otis Redding. Grey’s bluesy voice builds upon these past artists and puts his own soul into the music. You can’t help but feel the need to clap your hands and stomp your feet to this new song.
Grey said of “Wonderland,” in an interview, “When I was younger it was so hard for me to write a song about simple happiness. This song is almost like a post-it note for me, there to remind me that everyday is the first day of my life.” Raucous and celebratory, the song is off Grey’s first self-produced album. He sings his personal stories with universal themes of redemption, rebirth, hard luck, and inner peace. He exclaims in this new single, “I’m exactly who I wanted to be.” And the infectious energy of the song makes that easy to believe.
Make sure to catch them at the Ryman March 7 on their massive U.S. tour starting on February 2.
