This week on Community Corner, Brother Love sits down with co-founders Kait and Andre Feriante of Redwood Literacy. Originally from Chicago, Kait and Andre (also known as Sonny Luca) created Redwood Literacy to help students with dyslexia. They talk about the struggles and setbacks children with learning differences experience every day. Their main goal is to bring back confidence to those with learning differences.

Before creating Redwood Literacy, Kait and Andre both taught at the middle/high school level. Kait used to teach middle and high school special education, while Andre taught high school English. During Kait’s first year teaching 8th grade, she was able to help one of her students, who couldn’t recognize any words, begin to read full paragraphs. This experience inspired her to start Redwood Literacy and continue to help more students with learning difficulties.

Dyslexia is a neurobiological wiring of the brain and can affect one’s reading, writing, and spelling. Difficulties like these have a strong correlation to the high school dropout rate. In fact, 80% of the incarcerated population can’t read and have an undiagnosed learning difference. Redwood Literacy allows students to confidently improve these skills by offering the best class tutoring and assessments for kids with learning disabilities.

No matter one’s learning difficulty, Redwood offers online, in person, and group tutoring for all ages. Kait states one should never assume the school will handle a child’s learning difficulty. Instead, ask the right questions and seek help right away. Children who receive support early on develop more confidence, which results in faster progress. Redwood allows children to avoid years of frustration and rebuilds their confidence to overcome learning difficulties.

During the summer, Redwood offers a summer camp where children are tutored in small groups while also receiving personal attention during every session. Children from 1st-8th grade have the chance to develop their reading and spelling, comprehension, writing skills, and learn study tips.
